A hands-on plastic recycling workshops by Bart where participants learn how everyday plastic waste can be transformed into new, useful objects. Discover the recycling process, experiment with materials and colours, and create your own unique piece from locally collected plastic.

During the workshop, participants will explore the full recycling process from identifying and sorting different types of plastic to preparing, shredding, heating and remoulding the material using smallscale Precious Plastic machinery.

We’ll work mainly with locally collected HDPE material commonly found in bottle tops, milk bottles, food containers and household packaging. You’ll learn how to recognise different plastics, why some materials can be recycled more easily than others, and what happens to plastic when it is heated and reshaped.

The workshop combines practical making with an introduction to plastic pollution, circular design and alternative approaches to recycling. Rather than treating plastic simply as waste, we’ll explore it as a material that can be collected locally and transformed again and again.

Participants will get hands on experience with the process and create their own recycled plastic object to take home, such as a coaster, keychain, comb or soap dish. Every object is different, with its colours and patterns determined by the waste material used.

The session is led by Bartłomiej Urbański, activist and founder of Edinburgh-based DOBA Studio, a plastic recycling and design workshop working with locally collected waste and small-scale recycling machinery.

No previous experience is required, just curiosity about making, materials and what happens to our plastic after we throw it away.
